Beau Schmitz assigned to Florida

When the Hurricanes assigned defenseman Ryan Murphy to Charlotte on Friday, it left the Checkers with eight healthy defenseman.

As a result, the team assigned Beau Schmitz to the ECHL's Florida Everblades on Saturday.

The 22-year-old, second-year blue-liner, had played well when given the chance this season in Charlotte. Injuries to Michal Jordan, Danny Biega and Rasmus Rissanen allowed Schmitz -- who began the season as Charlotte's seventh defenseman -- to play in 23 games, registering two goals, four assists.

In Schmitz' most recent appearance, on Jan. 18, he posted a season-high plus-3 rating in a 6-1 win over the Texas Stars.

It's likely that Murphy, who was selected in the first round in 2011 by the Hurricanes, will remain in Charlotte until the NHL's Olympic break comes to a close at the end of February. So, barring an injury, it might be a little bit before Schmitz returns to the team.
